You’ll visit Yellowstone in September, a perfect time, thanks to small crowds, vivid landscapes, active wildlife and herds of elk wandering meadows along the riverbanks. Internationally recognized nature photographer and Canon Explorer of Light, Adam Jones, is your guide as you photograph remarkable scenic landscapes and wildlife including elk, deer, bear, coyote and large herds of bison.

You’ll not only shoot with the best instructors—you’ll shoot with the best gear! Workshop attendees can access a range of Canon “dream gear,” including the latest EOS cameras and lenses, with Canon instructors ready to offer their technical and creative assistance every step of the way.



We’ll headquarter our workshop in West Yellowstone, Montana, where we’ll meet, review and critique new images and even offer indoor lessons when the light and weather don’t cooperate.

Each day will feature photography field sessions. You will also have the opportunity to learn and experiment with a range of Canon EOS Bodies and EF lenses.

  • Canon gear loan (cameras, lenses, etc)

  • Your favorite camera and backup camera if you have one
  • We recommend bringing zoom lenses that range from 16mm to 500mm for distant landscapes and wildlife, such as the EF 24-70mm 2.8/L II USM and EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM. Please keep in mind that gear loans are included as part of the workshop fee and will pro- vide the opportunity to experiment with the latest Canon gear
  • Plenty of charged battery packs and memory cards
  • A sturdy tripod (a must!)
  • An electronic shutter release – Canon’s TC-80N3 or RS-80N3
  • A laptop computer for downloading images, backup hard drive and USB flash drive
  • Bring layers of clothing; Weather can be highly variable from early morning to noon. Mornings can be 
in the 30’s and daytime temperatures can climb into the low 70’s
  • Sturdy, water resistant shoes are suggested for walking in wet or frosty grasses


The workshop is limited to 16 students, so you’ll have plenty of instruction and support to properly capture Yellowstone’s classic mountain vistas, flowing streams, waterfalls, geysers, geothermal features and wildlife. You will learn how to:

  • Properly expose and create artistically designed images
  • How to ‘see’ like a professional landscape photographer
  • Create depth in your images during capture and post-production workflow
  • Improve images based on critique from Adam Jones


  • Using natural light and the elements of design to compose stunning landscape images
  • Learn to “see” like a pro: Go beyond the obvious
  • Why and how focal length impacts composition more than you think
  • Setting up your camera to work the way you want
  • Exposure: Getting it right every time, and using the histogram like a pro
  • HDR that looks photo realistic for high contrast scenes
  • Using depth of field as a creative tool
  • Image stacking for unlimited depth of field
  • Shutter speeds and motion treatments for moving subjects, such as water and wildlife
  • Filters for landscape photography
  • Basic macro techniques
  • Demystifying flash for nature images
  • Create panoramic images with stitching software
  • Telephoto lens techniques for capturing tack sharp well exposed wildlife images
  • Workflow from capture to print
  • Optimizing your images


Intermediate and advanced photographers are welcome. A firm understanding of your camera operations including using manual mode, f-stops and shutter speed is needed to make the most of this workshop.
